Sub-Standards of Standard 1

Explanation of when/where/how I met the appropriate level of mastery

a. Synthesize, analyze, reflect upon, and write with clarity and structure about ideas, information, and data from a general and liberal education, and the relationships between the various disciplines.

During student teaching I created a patriotism unit which was interdisciplinary between social studies and guided reading.

b. Understand and appreciate free inquiry in English, literature, humanities, social sciences, mathematics, natural or physical sciences, and the arts.

In Education 201 our class was assigned an Inquiry project with incorporated these various subjects.

c. Understand global and international perspectives of the disciplines.

Narrative Artifact

d. Understand the tenets of a free, democratic, and pluralistic society.

In Education 202 we learned about the history of the education system in the U.S. and the current issues that students face.

e. Understand and respect varying points of view and the influence of one’s own and others’ ethics and values.

In my First Year Seminar about Puerto Rico, we discussed the current political and cultural issues between the United States and Puerto Rico.

f. Understand and respect the role, rights, and value of the individual in a free democratic society.

In Education 201 we discussed the differences and values that should be found in a U.S. classroom.

g. Understand technology and its use for gathering, processing, evaluating, analyzing, and communicating ideas and information.

Narrative Artifact

h. Understand the similarities and differences within our culture that support the importance of common good and responsible citizenship within our American society.

In Education 201 we discussed the role of the U.S. government in the development of the Public School System.

i. Understand the constitutions and histories of the United States and Michigan.

In my student teaching unit plan we covered the histories of the United States.

j. Understand and respect individual differences, including the differences identified within the State Board of Education Universal Education Vision and Principles.

These topics were covered in various ways in classes like Education 201, Education 202 and Developmental Psychology.

k. Demonstrate the abilities and skills necessary for effective communication in speech, writing, and multimedia using content, form, voice, and style appropriate to the audience and purpose (e.g., to reflect, persuade, inform, analyze, entertain, inspire).

I have taken a creative writing course in Spanish as well as two English courses, in all of which I have written papers that were persuasive, informative, analytical, entertaining and reflective.
